iSTAR @ NU - Summer Workshop Series

Workshop Trains Educators in Forensic Science

Teachers from 19 Chicago-area middle and high schools dabbled in forensic science-related crime lab activities during a recent professional development workshop hosted by OSEP with the Chicago Public Schools’ Department of Science.

Local High Schoolers Attend Biotech Day

More than sixty high school students from Evanston and Chicago experimented with polymer slime, toured laboratories and discussed careers in biotechnology with graduate students during Biotechnology Day at Northwestern University, a one-day life sciences festival. Read more here. 

Search for OSEP Director

The School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) at Northwestern University has launched a search for a STEM Scholar and Director of the Office of STEM Education Partnerships. This faculty member will be a tenured-faculty member in SESP and serve half-time as OSEP Director. Please see the job description with full details and instructions to apply.  

Finnish Educators to visit U.S. FUSE Studios

In late October, the FUSE team will host a group of educators from Finland. The Finish team will spend their six-day trip learning more about FUSE and visiting some of the FUSE Studios in the Chicago area. FUSE opened its first international locations in August in two Helsinki schools. The Finish educators hope that what they learn on this visit can help them implement the programs more widely into Helsinki schools. Read more about their upcoming visit here.

Kits & Cats Day

Kits & Cats Day is a bi-annual field trip to Northwestern University for students from Evanston Township High School to show our ETHS students what college life is like and help them start planning for their post-secondary education. On Tuesday, October 11 th , nearly 100 ETHS students will visit campus, hear from heads of the university about the importance of a college education, and spend time in small groups with an NU undergraduate to learn about a “typical day in the life” of a college student. Associate Director of OSEP visits D.C. for Meeting with National Science Foundation

In September, Amy Pratt traveled to Washington D.C. as part of her role on the steering committee for the National Alliance for Broader Impacts (NABI) for a two-day meeting with the National Science Foundation (NSF). Pratt and her NABI colleagues presented to the NSF regarding the work that NABI is doing to build institutional capacity and a community of practice for broader impacts around the country. The Office of STEM Education Partnerships is a founding member of the National Alliance for Broader Impacts.

iSTAR@NU

This summer the Institute for STEM Teaching and Research at Northwestern University (iSTAR@NU) was filled with professional development workshops. OSEP held 9 different workshops and worked with over 125 educators to help improve STEM learning in their classrooms and schools. The workshop topics ranged from engineering, biotechnology in middle and high schools, research for teachers, exploring DNA & beyond, math and STEAM, and design thinking in STEM. Be sure to check the OSEP website and sign up for updates to receive information about iSTAR@NU professional development opportunities.

7th Annual STEM Summit

On June 13th, 2016 over 100 educators came together at Argonne National Laboratory for a day focused on hands-on, inquiry and problem-based teaching and learning in STEM; design-thinking STEM activities; NGSS aligned curriculum and more. Dr. David Gatchell, PhD, of Northwestern University, was the keynote speaker, and there were sixteen unique breakout sessions whose specific topics ranged from coding to literacy in STEM to renewable energy sources to laboratory protocol. The Office of STEM Education Partnerships and R&D STEM Learning Exchange co-hosted the event. We are thankful to our partner Argonne National Laboratory, and our sponsor of the 7th Annual STEM Summit, Motorola Solutions Foundation.
